Must do negotiations: Set yourself up to lead

Carol Kulik
Professor of Human Resource Management

Many women think “negotiation” is a dirty word; they avoid negotiating as much as possible. But everyday negotiations can be a win-win for employee and employer. It’s not just about negotiating the front-end salary, but about negotiating the role responsibilities, resources, professional development, and work flexibility that best support your career. With a little practice, women can be extremely effective negotiators, but the strategies that work best for women aren’t the same strategies that work for men.

Key discussion points and workshop areas:

  • Recognising the barriers that keep women from negotiating in the workplace (and knowing when to push past them).
  • Identifying the everyday work situations that are most/least receptive to negotiations.
  • Developing a positive negotiation reputation.
  • The behaviours that contribute to an effective negotiation (pro tip: many of those behaviours happen before the negotiation starts!).
