The biggest pay rises awarded this year have gone to sectors largely dominated by men, but that doesn’t mean women have been left out.
Financy has obtained an exclusive look at the SEEK 2016 Salary Report which shows that in sectors dominated by women the average annual payrise for 2016 was 1.83 per cent, compared to 2.38 per cent for sectors dominated by men.
The result was heavily influenced by salary increases in farming, design and architecture, which jumped an average of 7.6 per cent and 4 per cent over the past 12 months respectively.
The most sizeable payrise by sector for women was in administration and office support, up 3.7 per cent, followed next by education and training, up 3.4 per cent.
What’s interesting is that of the top five sectors that saw pay rises this year, the average salaries were still either below or only just above the average average national wage of $79,000.
Here’s some words of wisdom on asking for a payrise from Shoes of Prey co-founder Jodie Fox.
Those working in government and defence, which is a sector dominated by men, received a 3.5 per cent pay rise on average this year.
Despite the end of the resources boom, mining and energy related jobs, also male dominated, are still the highest paying with an average salary of $113,000 but that has actually dropped by 1.7 per cent this year from nearly $116,000.
